You may remember\u00a0Netflix<\/a>\u00a0announcing it would test restricting password sharing way back in March but we\u2019re here to tell you the tech will soon hit Australia. This week, in fact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tests originally ran\u00a0across three countries \u2013 Chile, Costa Rica and Peru \u2013 with the streaming service only allowing members to share their account outside the household \u201ceasily and securely, while also paying a bit more\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But now? She\u2019s a-comin\u2019 all the way Down Under.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Netflix has announced the crack down on sharing will function by using IP addresses to determine how many devices are using their account at their home and elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a\u00a0statement<\/a>, Netflix wrote:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cStarting today, we will be sending this email to members who are sharing Netflix outside their household in Australia.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA Netflix account is for use by one household. Everyone living in that household can use Netflix wherever they are \u2013 at home, on the go, on holiday \u2013 and take advantage of new features like Transfer Profile and Manage Access and Devices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe recognise that our members have many entertainment choices. It\u2019s why we continue to invest heavily in a wide variety of new films and TV programmes \u2013 so whatever your taste, mood or language and whoever you\u2019re watching with, there\u2019s always something satisfying to watch on Netflix.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe\u2019ve always made it easy for people who live together to share their Netflix account, with features like separate profiles and multiple streams in our Standard and Premium plans,\u201d Chengyi Long, director of product innovation at Netflix wrote of the anti-password sharing trial<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile these have been hugely popular, they have also created some confusion about when and how Netflix can be shared. As a result, accounts are being shared between households \u2014 impacting our ability to invest in great new TV and films for our members.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With the \u201cadd an extra member\u201d feature, members with Netflix\u2019s Standard and Premium plans will be able to add subsidiary accounts for up to two people they don\u2019t live with, each with their own profile, personalised recommendations, login and password \u2014 for less than the cost of a separate Netflix plan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the Netflix terms of service<\/a>, a customer\u2019s account \u201cmay not be shared with individuals beyond your household\u201d so, we\u2019ve been kinda lucky up to this point \u2013 but that luck has run out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
