{"id":1048,"date":"2019-12-09T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-12-09T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/uncategorised\/science-reveals-surprising-reason-why-we-hiccup\/"},"modified":"2021-12-03T13:34:49","modified_gmt":"2021-12-03T02:34:49","slug":"science-reveals-surprising-reason-why-we-hiccup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/lifestyle\/science-reveals-surprising-reason-why-we-hiccup\/","title":{"rendered":"Science Reveals Surprising Reason Why We Hiccup"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>We\u2019ve all had hiccups \u2013 plenty at inopportune times e.g. getting a massage, in a church etc. \u2013 but why do we get them? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, according to science, there\u2019s a very good reason you hiccup (yes, even those ones in silent movie theatres). <meta charset=\"utf-8\">Apparently, the act of hiccuping teaches babies to breathe properly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/babyhiccup-3.gif\" alt=\"\" title=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The study from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S1388245719312362?via%3Dihub\" target=\"_top\" rel=\"noopener\">Clinical Neurophysiology<\/a> has found that when newborn babies hiccup it develops mind-body connections which go on to assist with voluntarily controlling their breathing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study looked at 13 newborns and recorded that the infants hiccuped for as long as 15 minutes every day \u2013 we know, sounds terrible \u2013 but for babies, it\u2019s a little different. In fact, according to the study, they need to go through this process to learn how to hold their breath, take deep breaths and other related breathing skills.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The study goes on to explain that each hiccup initiates three big brain waves that help the infants develop neurological connections between the brain and the body. This helps babies learn how their bodies work.
