{"id":1795,"date":"2019-03-22T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/uncategorised\/west-side-story-brings-breathtaking-performance-timely-message-sydney-harbour\/"},"modified":"2019-03-22T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-03-22T00:00:00","slug":"west-side-story-brings-breathtaking-performance-timely-message-sydney-harbour","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/stage\/west-side-story-brings-breathtaking-performance-timely-message-sydney-harbour\/","title":{"rendered":"West Side Story brings a breathtaking performance with a timely message to Sydney harbour"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Less than a week after the New Zealand shooting, Opera Australia\u2019s production of&nbsp;<em>West Side Story<\/em>&nbsp;was a poignant and timely examination of intolerance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The themes of this classic Broadway musical \u2013 racially-driven rivalry, violence, love and hate \u2013 took on a greater significance for all in the wake of such tragedy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The first musical to be performed on Sydney\u2019s harbour stage,&nbsp;<em>West Side Story<\/em>&nbsp;was a breathtaking production rivalled only by the view of the setting sun over the harbour.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The city skyline and sound of lapping waves became an extension of the floating world of Handa Opera at Mrs Macquarie\u2019s Chair; the dramatic, graffiti-covered industrial set evoking Manhattan\u2019s urban jungle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"West Side Story\" title=\"STAGE\" height=\"993\" width=\"800\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%;\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" data-delta=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/west_side_story_3-3.jpg\" \/><\/p>\n<p>An interpretation of Shakespeare\u2019s&nbsp;<em>Romeo &amp; Juliet<\/em>,&nbsp;<em>West Side Story<\/em>&nbsp;follows the spiral of destruction caused by two warring gangs &#8211; the Puerto Rican Jets and the second-generation&nbsp;migrant Sharks. Racial rivalry manifests in its most extreme form, with the fight over territory secondary to the true source of the gangs\u2019 hatred.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The love of two young people from opposing camps &#8211; American teen and Sharks member Tony, and Puerto Rican Maria, sister of a Jet &#8211; is ultimately destroyed by the violence surrounding them.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The performance of iconic songs such as&nbsp;<em>Maria<\/em>,<em>&nbsp;I Feel Pretty<\/em>, and&nbsp;<em>Tonight&nbsp;<\/em>by opera singers Alexander Lewis and Julie Lea Goodwin adds a level of grandeur and technical prowess never before heard on this classic soundtrack.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>There are truly magnificent moments throughout the production, including fireworks launched from the harbour and exceptional choreography from Julio Monge which borrows key elements from Jerome Robbins\u2019 traditional arrangement.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Twice the size of any indoor stage in Australia, the floating stage is also sloped for prime viewing from anywhere in the grandstand seating.
