He quit following a record label audition spat with Pete Townshend and was replaced by Keith Moon.\n\n&#8220;Doug was an excellent drummer but was considered by our first record label to be too old for us,&#8221; Townshend writes on The Who&#8217;s official site. &#8220;It was his age and his wisdom that made him important to me.&#8221;\n\nIn a 2014 interview, Sandom confessed leaving The Who was &#8220;the biggest mistake of my life&#8221;, and his former bandmate has always regretted the way Doug left the band, just before landing a deal.\n\n&#8220;If you have read my book Who I Am, you will know how kind Doug was to me, and how clumsily I dealt with his leaving the band,&#8221; Townshend adds.&nbsp;\n<blockquote>&#8220;He never sneered at my aspirations the way some of my peers tended to do. (I was a bit of an egoistic handful sometimes).
