{"id":1944,"date":"2019-02-21T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/uncategorised\/monkees-star-peter-tork-dies-77\/"},"modified":"2019-02-21T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T00:00:00","slug":"monkees-star-peter-tork-dies-77","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/news\/monkees-star-peter-tork-dies-77\/","title":{"rendered":"The Monkees star Peter Tork dies at 77"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Peter Tork of The Monkees has passed away at 77-years-old.<br><br \/>\n\tThe bassist and singer died on Thursday 21 February, just over a week after his birthday.<br><br \/>\n\tHis sister, Anne Thorkelson, confirmed his loss to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/obituaries\/peter-tork-endearingly-offbeat-bassist-and-singer-in-the-monkees-dies-at-77\/2019\/02\/21\/479cf4ae-35ee-11e9-854a-7a14d7fec96a_story.html?utm_term=.1f54d47ac162\">The Washington Post<\/a>, although his cause of death has yet to be released.<br><br \/>\n\tHe previously suffered from a rare form of tongue cancer, adenoid cystic carcinoma, although he was given the all clear from his doctors in September, 2009, just six months after going public with his health crisis.<br><br \/>\n\tTork was a founding member of pop icons The Monkees, originally created for a U.S. TV series of the same name, which aired from 1966 to 1968.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Together with Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, and Davy Jones, the quartet enjoyed hits like I&#8217;m a Believer, A Little Bit Me, a Little Bit You, and Daydream Believer, and continued to record songs following the end of their TV show until 1971.<br><br \/>\n\tThey subsequently enjoyed a number of reunion shows and tours with various incarnations of the original line-up.<br><br \/>\n\tJones died in 2012, but the remaining trio continued to work together now and again, with Tork last touring with Dolenz and Nesmith in 2016.<br><br \/>\n\tTork&#8217;s last musical project was a Lead Belly tribute album titled Relax Your Mind, which he released last year.<\/p>\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Shortly after the news of his passing hit headlines, representatives for his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/PHTork1\/\">official Facebook page<\/a> posted a statement which read: <em>&#8220;It is with beyond-heavy and broken hearts that we share the devastating news that our friend, mentor, teacher, and amazing soul, Peter Tork, has passed from this world.&nbsp;<\/em><br><br \/>\n\t<em>&#8220;As we have mentioned in the past, the PTFB team is made up of Peter&#8217;s friends, family and colleagues &#8211; we ask for your kindness and understanding in allowing us to grieve this huge loss privately.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Images: Getty<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The musician died&nbsp;just over a week after his birthday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":4,"featured_media":1945,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[215],"tags":[],"geo_market":[],"class_list":["post-1944","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
