{"id":2710,"date":"2018-09-20T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-20T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/uncategorised\/app-scam-affects-commbank-and-anz-customers\/"},"modified":"2018-09-20T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-09-20T00:00:00","slug":"app-scam-affects-commbank-and-anz-customers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/news\/app-scam-affects-commbank-and-anz-customers\/","title":{"rendered":"Fake banking apps affect CommBank and ANZ customers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two malicious and fake banking apps have spent weeks undetected on the Google Play store impersonating&nbsp;<em>ANZ <\/em>and <em>Commonwealth Bank<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>More than 1000 <em>CommBank<\/em> and <em>ANZ<\/em> customers may have fallen victim to the cunning scam after unknowingly handing out their credit card details after downloading the fraudulent apps.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theage.com.au\/money\/banking\/cba-and-anz-caught-in-fake-banking-apps-scam-20180919-p504si.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>The Age<\/em><\/a> reports Nick FitzGerald, senior research fellow at IT security company ESET, said the apps were installed more than 1000 times before it alerted Google two weeks ago. <em>Google <\/em>would not confirm the number of downloads.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>ESET discovered the fake banking apps during routine checks conducted by researchers. &nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FitzGerald told <em>The Age<\/em> it was rare for fake banking apps to pass the automated <em>Google Play<\/em> tests and make it into the store.<\/p>\n<p>The fake apps functionality were extremely basic which may have been what helped them slip through the cracks.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cApps with less functionality are deemed less risky and given these fake banking apps only asked consumers to log in and then asked for their credit card details, they seemed to have slipped through.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cThe apps use obfuscation, which may have contributed to them slipping into the store undetected.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Users were simply asked to submit their credit card details or log-in credentials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>FitzGerald says if users fill out the form, the submitted data was sent to the attacker\u2019s service. The apps then presented victims with a<em> \u201ccongratulations\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cthank you\u201d <\/em>message, which is where the app functionality ends.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cThis is a big concern for anyone who may have handed over personal information.
