{"id":2783,"date":"2018-09-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-09-05T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/uncategorised\/taronga-zoo-asian-elephant-dies-suddenly-herpes-virus\/"},"modified":"2018-09-05T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-09-05T00:00:00","slug":"taronga-zoo-asian-elephant-dies-suddenly-herpes-virus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/news\/taronga-zoo-asian-elephant-dies-suddenly-herpes-virus\/","title":{"rendered":"Taronga Zoo Asian Elephant dies suddenly from herpes virus"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In quite possibly the craziest, most depressing news of all time, eight-year-old Asian Elephant Tukta has passed away from herpes.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2018-09-04\/taronga-zoo-elephant-tukta-dies-from-herpes\/10200394\" target=\"_top\">ABC News<\/a> report that the female elephant &#8211; the first born at the zoo &#8211;&nbsp;showed signs of lethargy on Monday and was quickly diagnosed with&nbsp;Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV), passing away not long after.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Despite the swift action of everyone involved, she tragically lost her fight against the virus later that afternoon,&#8221; the zoo said in a statement.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Our hearts are broken by Tukta&#8217;s sudden and unexpected loss&nbsp;Director and CEO Cameron Kerr added.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;She was a much-loved member of Taronga&#8217;s elephant herd who loved caring for her little brother Jai Dee.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"980\" width=\"1305\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%;\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" data-delta=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/baby_tukta_getty.jpg\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n\n<p>Taronga&nbsp;Zoo also explained that&nbsp;EEHV is&nbsp;present in almost all Asian elephants but it only causes illness when the animals are young.<\/p>\n<p>According to&nbsp;Senior Veterinarian Dr Larry Vogelnest, the disease poses no risk to humans but progresses rapidly in elephants and is almost always fatal.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;The virus that Tukta succumbed to is naturally carried by Asian elephants, and occasionally causes disease in elephants, most commonly between one and eight years of age,&#8221; Vogelnest explained.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;There is no vaccine available for this virus, and at present drug treatment is effective only in one third of cases.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"235\" width=\"360\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%;\" class=\"media-element file-media-original nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" data-delta=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/it_me.gif\" alt=\"\" title=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Image: Getty<\/em><\/p>\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>SOBBING.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12,"featured_media":2786,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[215],"tags":[],"geo_market":[],"class_list":["post-2783","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v27.3 (Yoast SEO v27.3) -
