Macca’s has joined the fight for sea turtles and will no longer have plastic straws on offer at their Australian locations. The fast food company will instead offer up paper straws with a trial set to start in August at two locations.

The company announced they would roll out the change to all 970 restaurants around the country by 2020.

Macca’s says it’s all part of a long-term effort to use sustainable alternatives.

McDonald’s Australia supply chain director Robert Sexton said:

“We know plastic straws is a topic our customers are passionate about and we will find a viable solution.”

Greenpeace spokesman Simon Black said:

“It’s wonderful McDonald’s is making a commitment to reducing consumption of single-use plastic and we look forward to seeing more detail around this proposal to see the overall impact.”

The announcement follows Starbucks’ decision to also eliminate plastic straws in the next two years due to the environmental threat to the oceans.

McDonald’s will be using the same paper straws the company is trialing in the UK.
