{"id":3103,"date":"2018-07-05T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-07-05T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/uncategorised\/clone-medicare-fake-email-scam-how-protect-yourself\/"},"modified":"2018-07-05T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-07-05T00:00:00","slug":"clone-medicare-fake-email-scam-how-protect-yourself","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/news\/clone-medicare-fake-email-scam-how-protect-yourself\/","title":{"rendered":"Medicare email scam: How to protect yourself"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Australian Government issued a warning this week via their Stay Smart Online site:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Scammers have set up a clone of the myGov website to trick you into sharing your login and bank account details.<br><br \/>\n\t\t\u201dThe scam starts with a phishing email that looks like it is from Medicare, asking you to update your Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) details, so you can start receiving payments for Medicare benefits and claims.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The email looks like this:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"484\" width=\"408\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%;\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" data-delta=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/medicare-scam-01.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The link in the scam email leads users to a replica of the myGov website. Once logged in, the fake site then asks for the user\u2019s secret security question and answer, then their bank details.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The easiest way to spot the fake site? The URL ends in .net &#8211; where the official site ends with .gov.au:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" height=\"1008\" width=\"780\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%;\" class=\"media-element file-default nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" data-delta=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/medicare-scam-02.png\" alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The best way to stay safe? Don\u2019t click on any emails you get from \u2018Medicare\u2019 or \u2018myGov\u2019 &#8211; no matter how real they appear.
