{"id":3530,"date":"2018-05-02T00:00:00","date_gmt":"2018-05-02T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/uncategorised\/most-annoying-and-awkward-things-you-can-do-plane\/"},"modified":"2018-05-02T00:00:00","modified_gmt":"2018-05-02T00:00:00","slug":"most-annoying-and-awkward-things-you-can-do-plane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/lifestyle\/travel\/most-annoying-and-awkward-things-you-can-do-plane\/","title":{"rendered":"The most annoying things you can do on a plane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019re about to jet off for a holiday anytime soon, you may want to brush up on your airplane etiquette before you leave \u2013 especially if it\u2019s a long-haul flight.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.expedia.com.au\">Expedia<\/a> has released their 2018 Airplane Etiquette report to highlight the things some people do in the air that are simply not tolerated by fellow passengers. The study involved 18,229 respondents from 23 different countries.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n<p>The report also reinforced the importance of selecting your seat with 98 per cent of respondents saying they prefer the aisle or the window seat.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s be honest, we\u2019ve all been in the dreaded middle seat (or window for that matter) and needed to run to the bathroom but haven\u2019t been able to because the aisle passenger is asleep, right? While many Aussies chicken out of waking up their aisle buddy (only 31 per cent of people said they\u2019d wake them up), many opt for risky manoeuvres such as:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u2013 29 per cent climb over them with their back facing them<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u2013 25 per cent stay and wait for them to wake up<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u2013 15 per cent climb over them, facing them<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Seat climber \" title=\"TRAVEL\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%;\" class=\"media-element file-media-original nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" data-delta=\"2\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/plane_seat_climber.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Another dilemma many face is finding the best time to recline their seat. Again, many Aussies are divided, with 40 per cent stating you should only recline your seat for flights over 3 hours. In fact, 20 per cent of Aussies believe it\u2019s rude to recline your seat, period. Other results:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;47 per cent recline only if they\u2019re going to sleep<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;17 per cent recline as soon as the seatbelt sign goes off after take-off<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;20 per cent follow suit if the person in front of them does<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\u2013&nbsp;Another 20 per cent recline after meal service has taken place<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Tuna sub on plane\" title=\"TRAVEL\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%;\" class=\"media-element file-media-original nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" data-delta=\"3\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/tuna_sub_on_plane.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>These are the most annoying plane <\/strong><strong>behaviours<\/strong><strong> according to the report:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> The seat grabber (60 per cent) \u2013 the person who constantly bumps and grabs the seat in front of them when they get up out of their seat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> The inattentive parent (45 per cent) \u2013 the parents who pay no attention to their child whether they are crying, whinging or misbehaving.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> The aromatic passenger (44 per cent) \u2013 poor hygiene or the polar opposite of wearing too much perfume or cologne.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. <\/strong>Personal space violator (35 per cent) \u2013 passenger who gets too close or falls asleep on or near you on the flight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5.<\/strong> Audio insensitive (22 per cent) \u2013 passenger who talks loudly disturbing the peace in the cabin.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6.<\/strong> Queue jumper (21 per cent) \u2013 passenger who rushes to deplane before those seated in front of them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>7.<\/strong> Pungent foodie (13 per cent) \u2013 someone who brings particularly whiffy food onto the plane.<\/p>\n<p><strong>8.<\/strong> Baggage mishandler (13 per cent) \u2013 someone who hogs all the overhead locker space or hits you with luggage on the way down<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Annoying plane passenger\" title=\"TRAVEL\" height=\"1\" width=\"1\" style=\"width: 100%; height: 100%;\" class=\"media-element file-media-original nova-lazyload-image-wrapper lz-cont img-responsive\" data-delta=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/annoying_plane_passenger.gif\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Expedia travel expert Lisa Perkovic, who travelled overseas 11 times last year, commented on the new report:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>\u201cWith the launch of ultra-long-haul flights, time in the sky is getting longer so being stuck in a cabin with an inconsiderate passenger can start the holiday off on the wrong foot. There are some simple ways Aussies can ensure people around them have a relaxing and pleasant flight.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cPatience, politeness <\/em><em>and<\/em><em> planes are a match made in the sky, so we encourage Aussies to take a deep breath and think about how they can be a better passenger on their next flight.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The fact is, us Aussies are so far away from a lot of other countries so having consideration for other passengers on long haul flights is very important! Here are Expedia\u2019s tips for plane peace:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.<\/strong> Introduce yourself before the plane takes off and establish ground rules \u2013 this works well if you\u2019re in the middle or aisle seat. Start by asking the aisle seat if they would like to be woken up or climbed over during the flight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.<\/strong> Warn the seat behind you if you\u2019re going to recline your seat \u2013 even if the passenger behind hates people who recline seats, they are going to appreciate that you gave them warning, rather than just putting the seat back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.<\/strong> Keep your feet on the floor, not on the arm rest in front \u2013 no one wants to see feet peeking through when then they are trying to sleep on the plane.
