As long as there have been women, there have been periods and the cramps that go along with them\u2026 there also have been people standing by (many of whom don\u2019t even have uteruses), telling them that their pain can\u2019t be thaaaattt bad. <\/p>\n\n

Despite the fact that it\u2019s pretty baffling that anyone could possibly feel like they have the knowledge or the right<\/em> to comment on another person\u2019s pain without ever having experienced it themselves, arguments on the severity of the pain of menstrual cramps tend to pop up (like nasty, trivialising, weeds) all too often. <\/p>\n\n

Well, now we have medical proof that these cramps are no joke (tell women something we don\u2019t know). <\/p>\n

Frank Tu, director of gynaecological pain at NorthShore University HealthSystem, spoke with Quartz<\/em><\/a> about the agony women can suffer in every single month, explaining that he\u2019s had patients endure pain \u201calmost as bad as having a heart attack\u201d<\/em>. <\/p>\n

Yes, that\u2019s right. The pain has been compared to a heart attack<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

The medical term for menstrual cramps is called dysmenorrhea. There is very little information around about the medical reason behind the cramps and while a small number of women can link their pain back to endometriosis<\/a> (another incredibly painful condition which comes from the growth of endometrial tissue outside the uterus) for the majority, there is no real explanation that can be offered. <\/p>\n

Now, while this may not be the case for all<\/em> women \u2013 some lucky ladies live with periods that are nothing more than mildly annoying \u2013 there are plenty who have to live in crippling pain for hours at a time, every damn month. <\/p>\n

For this reason, Twitter all but exploded with passionate messages as soon as news broke that a medical professional had finally publicly recognised their pain.<\/p>\n\n
