If you or anyone you know is impacted by cancer, help and information is available through the Cancer Council on 13 11 20.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Like any other 21-year-old woman starting out in the world, Kristen Larsen had huge plans.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Queensland native simply wanted to help people &#8211; and was studying at university to further her dream career in human resources, while working full time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her only other dream in life was to live and be successful overseas, and as soon as she could, Kristen took the \u201chare brained\u201d leap of moving to London with her sister Elsa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cI used to just repeat to myself, if your dreams don\u2019t scare you, they\u2019re not big enough,\u201d she said.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">London was just the first stop on Kristen\u2019s list \u2013 her goal was to take her Chihuahua Henry all over Europe and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A vibrant and active woman, nothing should have stopped Kristen from following her dreams.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In late 2019, Kristen passed away from advanced ovarian cancer. She had been diagnosed at 21, after only really experiencing a little bit of bloating.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kristen\u2019s experience is not unique. For many women, the only signs of ovarian cancer are cramps, bloating, feeling full or needing to urinate more often \u2013 all which mimic common female complaints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Statistics from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocrf.com.au\/page\/74\/facts-about-ovarian-cancer\">Ovarian Cancer Research Foundation<\/a> show that every day, four women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around 70% of those diagnosed will discover that their ovarian cancer is in the advanced stages, and only 25% of these women will survive beyond five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no early detection test for women, and the causes are still entirely unknown.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kristen believed that death was not a reflection of losing a battle or a fight. In fact, she despised that terminology. Cancer did not beat Kristen, she beat cancer by living an incredible life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kristen knew first hand that research is the only hope that women with ovarian cancer have, for a future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before Kristen passed, she created and cultivated the <a href=\"https:\/\/cureourovariancancer.org\/au\/campaigns\/kristens-living-legacy\/\">Ovarshare<\/a> podcast, a powerful series featuring people whose spirit will touch the hearts and souls of those who listen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The honest and gut wrenching six-episode series shares the story of Kristen, other survivors, those who passed and their families and friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ovarian cancer is the most lethal gynaecological cancer, with one woman dying every eight hours from the disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These women could be your sister, wife, mother, or daughter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, hear their stories on Ovarshare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You can listen to Ovarshare on <a href=\"https:\/\/podcasts.apple.com\/au\/podcast\/ovarshare\/id1375826545\">Apple<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/play.acast.com\/s\/ovarshare\">ACAST<\/a>, or wherever you get your podcasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Image: Supplied<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Content Warning: This article discusses triggering topics and may cause distress.
