So, when we had the opportunity to pick the brain of Sandie Docker, the best-selling author of The Banksia Bay Beach Shack<\/em>, we jumped at the chance.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sandie knows exactly how to get those creative juices flowing, how to pour emotion and depth into a scene – and she\u2019s here with some hot tips for all of our fan fiction\u2026 uh, we mean, serious writing endeavours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Sandie says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \u201cI have what my teenage daughter would consider a rather embarrassing playlist titled \u2018Am Writing\u2019, full of songs by Adele, James Blunt, and Michael Buble with the odd tune by Pink and Lady Gaga. It’s also somewhat track-heavy with ABBA songs, which is probably why my daughter finds it cringe-worthy…<\/p> I use this playlist in between writing sessions to help find the mood of a passage, or the feel of a character, or to picture a scene more clearly in my head. A little bit like a movie trailer \u2013 if this scene was in the movie version of my novel, what would the soundtrack be?\u00a0<\/p> My \u2018on-repeat\u2019 songs change novel to novel, and for The Banksia Bay Beach Shack<\/em> they were:<\/p> \u00b7 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 The Beach Boys, I Get Around<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 This was the song that helped me get into the feeling of the surf era in the 1960s to help craft Lily and Gigi\u2019s childhood.<\/p> \u00b7 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Taylor Swift, Back To December<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 This was my go-to song when the idea for The Banksia Bay Beach Shack <\/em>was first swimming around in my mind and I was creating Lily and Gigi. It helped me centre myself in the Bay and now, when it pops up on the school run, I\u2019m immediately transported back to Banksia Bay.\u00a0<\/p> \u00b7 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Adele, All I Ask<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 During the storm scene I had to get the feeling between Laura and Heath just right and this was the song I used to help capture Laura\u2019s emotions at that moment.<\/p> \u00b7 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Lewis Capaldi<\/strong>, Someone You Loved<\/em><\/strong> \u2013 In the aftermath of the event that leads Laura to leave Banksia Bay (no spoilers!), this song helped me tap into her innermost feelings.<\/p> \u00b7 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Conrad Sewell, Start Again<\/em> <\/strong>\u2013 My books always have an uplifting (if not always happy) ending and this is the song that would play in the end scenes if The Banksia Bay Beach Shack <\/em>was a movie.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n Well, consider us inspired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Image: Pexels<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Here at smoothfm, if there\u2019s one thing we love more than music, it\u2019s a good read.
