In episode two of Invisible Heroes, Madeleine West interviews Detective Superintendent Jayne Crossling who has over 30 years experience in victim based crime.

While Victoria is currently in the middle of their six week lockdown for its second wave of coronavirus, the AFP are still out in full force and not just focusing on the pandemic.

Detective Superintendent Crossling works in online child sexual exploitation, human trafficking and cyber crime and opens up to West about what happens in our own country:

“In Australia, who is trafficking? Who is utilising children in terms of cyber crime? Who is making the dollars out of this?” West asks.

“So there is very much the case of people who obtain pleasure from looking at the images. Theres been a lot of research by the Australian Institue of Criminology of what is a ‘typical online sex offender in Australia’ and their findings indicate that there is no set profile,” says Detective Superintendent Crossling.

“It’s fair to say that the person is predominantly male but not exclusively male.”

Which makes it difficult for the AFP and the teams have to keep an open mind as to who is the perpetrator.

“In human trafficking space – there is often a family connection like forced marriage but for some of our other offences there is often money in it for them so forced labor or sexual servitude,” Detective Superintendent Crossling says.

“There is also the organised crime aspect, that somebody is seeking to make children and other victims into a commodity and found a way to monetise that.”

It may seem surprising to some that offences like these are occurring in Australia, so how do we prevent it?

“Looking at the human trafficking element, it’s about education it is about people knowing their rights and knowing what Australian law looks like.

“So it could be that these people have not been in Australia all that long and they’re just not aware – either as a victim or a perpetrator – what the Australian law looks like.

“But as we know that’s not an excuse to commit offences in Australia,” Detective Superintendent Crossling adds.

West then asks Detective Superintendent Crosslin what the journey looks like for these victims from the beginning.

“What typically happens is someone is brought to Australia from whatever country and they’re told that they will be working in a particular industry.

“So they might be told they’re going to work in the beauty industry but when they get here it turns out that they are actually working in a brothel.”

Usually the victim is then told that they have a debt that they need to work off for being brought out to Australia.

“That debt is extremely inflated and not indicative of the cost that would have been born by the offender to bring that person out

“Then they’re told that they have to work that debt off. Then what goes along with that is that they don’t have access to their passport, they might be locked within a premises either to work or even to sleep, they may only be allowed outside under escort.

“So that is definitely the case that we have seen in a number of different jurisdictions in Australia.”

I wish I could put a positive spin on this…but I’ve just discovered that each year, somewhere between 4 and 27 million people fall victim to human trafficking. That equates to profits of around $10 billion harvested from human #misery…and it’s happening here in Australia. 83% of victims are #women 50% are minors… Sex slavery Forced labor Forced underage marriage Sexual exploitation of #children The problem is very real and closer than we think…and it’s everywhere..every state, city, town, street. This week I had the privilege of speaking to a 30 year veteran of victim-based crime in this specific field, Detective Superintendent Jayne Crossling of the Australian Federal Police. I urge you to listen to her story… it makes for uncomfortable listening but forewarned is forearmed. Our chat lands Monday Aug 3rd on my podcast series INVISIBLE HEROES… Hers is a job you wouldn’t wish on anyone… and she herself wishes wasn’t necessary. The link will be in my bio, or wherever you get your podcasts… @australianfederalpolice #humantrafficking #childexploitation #sexslave #childbride #victim #crime #forcedlabour #podcast @byronbaylive https://cms.smooth.com.au/podcast/invisible-heroes/
