That gross, grimy feeling you get when you need to wash your hands is not nice, not one bit. Luckily for us, we know how to wash our hands (showers are also a useful thing), but sometimes basic hand washing doesn&#8217;t get rid of all of the germs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you frequently wear jewelry, chances are there&#8217;s some microscopic nasties hanging onto your favourite rings or necklace.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A recent study conducted by pre-owned jewellery brand <a href=\"https:\/\/est1897.co.uk\/\">Est.1897<\/a> found that a piece of jewellery can hold up to 428 times more germs than a toilet seat after just one week\u2019s worth of wear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just let that sink in\u2026&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/media3.giphy.com\/media\/4baoNZ5Qo8dX2\/giphy.gif?cid=ecf05e47esn6rrdbii22ethh0udplz4t6sxcu0k72ftgeyhk&amp;rid=giphy.gif\" alt=\"puke GIF\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The worst offenders? Rings, of course. It makes sense &#8211; they sit on our hands and our hands touch just about everything. The study found 504 bacterial colonies, one fungus colony and one black mould colony after just <em>one week of wear on the rings analysed.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Ah <\/em>Bacteria, it\u2019s a pesky thing.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So how do you stop your jewellry from becoming a breeding ground for bacteria?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frequent scrubbing and soaking is a good way to clean your sparkly friends.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Add a few drops of mild dish soap to a bowl of warm water to make a soapy solution and let your rings etc soak for about 20 minutes. Then, using a soft toothbrush (note: NOT the one you use to brush your teeth), gently scrub the jewellery to remove first. Rinse and dry.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a deeper clean, Andrew Brown, CEO of WP Diamonds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/product-recommendations\/lifestyle\/how-to-clean-jewelry-watch-disinfect-997925\/\">recommends<\/a> using the steam wand on an espresso machine. Just secure your favourite necklace in a tea strainer and blast with steam.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What about jewellery with gemstones? How do you clean that? An expert from Simon G. Jewelry told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.refinery29.com\/en-us\/2020\/03\/9601646\/how-to-clean-jewelry-during-coronavirus\">Refinery29<\/a> you should disinfect them with regular household isopropyl alcohol or hydrogen peroxide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This rule does not apply, however, to soft stones like opal, kunzites, pearls, tourmalines and emeralds. \u201cTake care with any other kind of stones and use a gentler form of cleaning,\u201d they explained.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re unsure, it always helps to do your research. Ask a jeweller what they recommend or even drop off your jewellery for cleaning . There are also plenty of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dicksmith.com.au\/da\/buy\/kogan-ultrasonic-jewellery-cleaner-600ml\/\">portable jewellery cleaners and sanitisers<\/a> on the market if the DIY option isn\u2019t for you.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whatever your approach, the bottom line is that it\u2019s important to clean your jewellery frequently.
