Gastrointestinal issues

Yes, chia seeds = high fibre = good for your stomach. But too much might actually upset your tum.

“Excessive fiber intake or concentrated fiber intake can for some cause symptoms such as bloating, abdominal pain, diarrhea, constipation, or gas,” Erica told Bustle.

This can be especially uncomfortable if you have Crohn’s disease or Irritable Bowel Syndrome, especially during a flare up. This is not to say that chia seeds are bad for people with sensitive stomachs, but it’s a good idea to moderate how much you consume.

2. Effect on blood sugar

According to Zellner, fiber in chia seeds can slow digestion of food and absorption of macronutrients (fats, carbs and proteins), including sugars contained in food.

“This can encourage gentler increases and decreases in blood sugars when it is paired alongside other proteins and fats.”

This might usually be a good thing, but if you’re on medication to control your blood sugar, Zellner advises talking with your doctor before adding chia seeds to your next smoothie.

Side effects of chia seeds. These fatty acids can lower your risk of developing certain cancers or heart problems.

Excessive omega 3 consumption can cause blood to thin out = bad. However, this is not usually an issue unless you are already on blood thinning medication or frequently experience low blood pressure,

4. Allergies

This one may seem obvious but it’s still important to note. Chia seeds are actually in the same family as mint (random, we know), so people with known allergies to mint, sesame or mustard seeds should be cautious about trying chia seeds.

5. Potential effects on pregnant people

The fibre in chia seeds is also very helpful when it comes to digestion – a thing which many pregnant people can struggle with (constipation – it’s not fun). While this is a positive side effect of chia seeds, it’s important to be careful of what you put in your body while preggers.

Side effects of chia seeds.
