In October last year, Tom Petty passed away at 66 years old.<\/p>\n\n

It was a horror week for his family as media continuously shared contesting reports.<\/p>\n\n

His daughter, Kimberly took to Instagram <\/a>to slam Rolling Stone in particular for publishing that her father had lost his life before he actually did die.<\/p>\n

She wrote:<\/p>\n

\u201c@rollingstone my dad is not dead yet but your f***ing magazine is your slime has been pieces of tabloid dog shit. You put the worst artists on your covers do zero research. How dare you report that my father has died just to get press because your articles and photos are so dated.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

A few hours later it was revealed that medical professionals were unable to save Petty and he passed peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. It was reported that Petty suffered as cardiac arrest however his death certificate read \u201cdeferred\u201d.<\/p>\n

According to a statement from the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner, it was revealed today that after months of speculation, a medical examiner has ruled that Tom Petty died of an accidental overdose.<\/p>\n

The musician had taken several pain medications, including Fentanyl, oxycodone and generic Xanax. Other medications included generic Restoril (a sleep aid) and generic Celexa (which treats depression).<\/p>\n

Rolling Stone <\/em>reported the coroner’s office listed Petty’s official cause of death as “multisystem organ failure due to resuscitated cardiopulmonary arrest due to mixed drug toxicity,” noting the singer suffered from coronary artery atherosclerosis and emphysema.<\/p>\n

The family stated in the statement that Petty was prescribed the drugs to treat emphysema, knee issues and a fractured hip.<\/p>\n

His coronary artery disease had been a consistent problem through his final tour Petty\u2019s wife Dana and daughter Adria wrote in the statement:<\/p>\n

“Despite this painful injury he insisted on keeping his commitment to his fans and he toured for 53 dates with a fractured hip and, as he did, it worsened to a more serious injury.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cOn the day he died he was informed his hip had graduated to a full on break and it is our feeling that the pain was simply unbearable and was the cause for his over use of medication.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\r\n\r\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
