Roads Minister Melinda Pavey is being blasted by the Transport Workers Union (TWU) after suggesting that drivers use technology that jolts them awake with an electric shock during an interview with the ABC. <\/p>\n

\u201cThe technology now is so advanced, a driver can be driving and get an electric shock if they look away from the windscreen for more than two seconds,\u201d she reportedly said.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The comment comes after Hannah Ferguson and Reagan Skinner were killed on Tuesday after a truck struck six vehicles near Dubbo. As news.com.au<\/a> reports, the cause of the incident has not been confirmed. <\/p>\n

The TWU has responded to Pavey\u2019s comment, allegedly calling it, \u201cheartless, arrogant and completely incompetent\u201d<\/em>. <\/p>\n

According to reports, the Union has said that the cause of accidents like Tuesday\u2019s is \u201cextreme and unfair working conditions\u201d<\/em>.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead of blaming drivers, the minister must ensure that all levels of the supply chain take responsibility,\u201d a representative is reported to have said. <\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Pavey spoke further about the issue with news.com.au<\/a>:<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we can\u2019t have a decent honest conversation about the technology available, we have some issues. It\u2019s not the time to put our heads in the sand,\u201d she told the publication.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cNo one [wants] drivers out there in unsafe conditions and we do have a challenging shortage of drivers in an industry full of good people.<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been a struggle for some drivers to be monitored but many have embraced it because they want to return to their families at the end of the day.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n
