This longevity, resilience and achievement is something for everyone who lives or travels across Australia to be proud of and find inspiration in.

Despite this incredible story of survival, since the arrival of Europeans some 250 years ago, Indigenous Australians have been continuously oppressed and ostracised, placing their communities and individual experiences under immense pressure and disadvantage.

There is a duality in NAIDOC Week as an event that calls for celebration and pride, but also truth-telling, empathy and compassion. It is a time for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to be heard, celebrated and honoured, and for non-Indigenous Australians to listen to the Indigenous community.

Ultimately, NAIDOC Week is something we can – and should – all celebrate and participate in, in some way. It is a moment in the year where all Australians of all walks of life can take the time to reflect on how they can contribute to paving the path forward together, bettering relations in a way that respects and benefits the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, so we may guarantee a brighter, more prosperous future for all.

But what can I do this NAIDOC Week?

Often the issues and tough topics that come to the forefront during NAIDOC can be confronting and, especially considering the surge of the Black Lives Matter movement in Australia earlier this year, can leave non-Indigenous people feeling ignited to do something to be better allies, but unsure where to start.

Whilst this is by no means a comprehensive list, consider it a starting point for actions to take and things to consider through this NAIDOC Week and beyond:

Attend local NAIDOC Events (either online or in person), most local communities will hold an event marking NAIDOC Week. It may be a ceremony, market stalls or ‘In Conversation’ style events with local Aboriginal community members. These are great places to start your education throughout the week and are particularly great for understanding the Aboriginal history of your local area and what the community is doing or working on today.

Buy products from Indigenous owned businesses or donate to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander non-profits! The ‘Buy Indigenous’ website has a great index of businesses to start with.

Read/watch/listen to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, through literature, film and television, podcasts and social media.
