{"id":43108,"date":"2020-11-19T11:59:51","date_gmt":"2020-11-19T00:59:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/?p=43108"},"modified":"2020-11-19T12:00:03","modified_gmt":"2020-11-19T01:00:03","slug":"mobile-speed-camera-signs-set-to-be-removed-as-part-of-new-road-safety-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/news\/mobile-speed-camera-signs-set-to-be-removed-as-part-of-new-road-safety-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"Mobile Speed Camera Signs Set To Be Removed As Part Of New Road Safety Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Right after announcing they <a href=\"https:\/\/cms.smooth.com.au\/news\/nsw-adults-to-be-gifted-100-in-vouchers-for-economic-boost\/\">will be giving locals $100 in gift vouchers<\/a>, the NSW Government has confirmed they will be removing signs warning drivers of mobile speed cameras as part of a massive road safety blitz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Signs positioned at around 250m and 50m in front of mobile speed cameras will be removed over the next 12 months after independent modelling from&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.monash.edu\/muarc\">Monash University Accident Research Centre<\/a>&nbsp;showed the move may save more lives.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The modelling showed the NSW Government that these enhancements to road safety may save been 34 and 43 lives and prevent 600 serious injuries in NSW every year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the decision to remove the signs leaves motorists across the state at risk of copping fines of up to $2,530 and several demerit points.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people have suggested the move is revenue-raising, but Minister for Transport and Roads Andrew Constance has hit back saying the decision is about shifting the culture around speeding.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cThis is about changing culture and changing behaviour,\u201d Mr Constance said.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cNo warnings signs mean you can be caught anywhere, anytime and we want that same culture around mobile speed cameras.\u201d&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed-podcast\/show\/7atRdaOsvf4N7bZxMQxgrn\" width=\"100%\" height=\"232\" frameborder=\"0\" allowtransparency=\"true\" allow=\"encrypted-media\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Warnings for fixed speed cameras will remain in place.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The removal of the mobile warning signs is a part of a wider road safety blitz being undertaken by the NSW Government around drink driving and driving under the influence of drugs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Constance confirmed harsher penalties would be thrown at those caught drink and drug driving from next year.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Drivers caught high range drink driver and with drugs in their system will face a combined charge and penalties of up to $11,000 if caught to make it easier to prosecute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the new reforms, drivers caught high range drink driving would face a fine of up to $11,000 and three years imprisonment for their second and third offences under new laws set to be introduced.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p><em>\u201cResearch shows you are 23 times more likely to crash if you are under the influence of both alcohol and drugs \u2013 this massive, life-threatening risk needs a stronger penalty,\u201d said Mr Constance.&nbsp;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The new laws are expected to be rolled out over the next 12 months.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Images:&nbsp;Getty<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Right after announcing they will be giving locals $100 in gift vouchers, the NSW Government has confirmed they will be removing signs warning drivers of mobile speed cameras as part of a massive road safety blitz.
