Another day, another insensitive, poorly thought out and downright racist statement made by the 45th President of the United States.

In case you missed it, Mr Trump caused the Internet to erupt with anger after news broke of an alleged statement he made about immigrants during an Oval Office meeting. A statement the White House has not denied he made.

According to reports, he asked the room:

“Why are we having all these people from s***hole countries come here?”

The countries he is believed to have been referencing are Haiti, El Salvador and a number of African nations. Discussions on which are said to have begun after politicians floated the idea of protecting immigrants from these countries as part of a bipartisan immigration deal, The Washington Post reported.

“Why do we need more Haitians?” Trump continued.

“Take them out.”

According to the publication, sources from the White House have stated that Trump suggested that the US instead work towards bringing in people from Norway and countries in Asia.

Spokesman Raj Shah released a statement on the controversy shortly after The Washington Post published the reports, stating that Mr Trump intends to “fight for the American people”.

“Certain Washington politicians choose to fight for foreign countries, but President Trump will always fight for the American people,” he said.

“. . . Like other nations that have merit-based immigration, President Trump is fighting for permanent solutions that make our country stronger by welcoming those who can contribute to our society, grow our economy and assimilate into our great nation.”

The response to the statement was swift and it was angry. The Internet all but exploded with comments of criticism about the offensive remarks. Most notable perhaps was the cover of the New York Daily News which reimagined Mr Trump as an angry poop emoji above the headline “S**t for brains”.
