Disney is getting slammed after they confirmed that several stunt actors and extras had been applied with makeup to darken their skin on the set of the new Aladdin<\/em> film. The movie has been controversial since its announcement as fans were worried the studio would hire a mostly white cast for a film that takes place in the fictional Middle East city of Agrabah. <\/p>\n

The studio has defended its decision to apply the darker makeup saying those who used it were members of the crew, not actors, as they needed to “blend in”<\/em> to the background. <\/p>\n

Disney made the statement in an interview with BBC’s Newsbeat, <\/em>saying how important it is for diversity in their film:<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat care was taken to put together one of the largest most diverse casts ever seen on screen.\u201d \u200b<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cDiversity of our cast and background performers was a requirement and only in a handful of instances when it was a matter of speciality skills, safety and control (special effects rigs, stunt performers and handling of animals) were crew made up to blend in.”<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

However, an extra who worked on the set, Kaushal Odedra, revealed that he saw approximately 20 “very fair-skinned<\/em>” actors having darker makeup applied on set. He told Newsbeat:<\/i><\/p>\n

\u201cAladdin was the perfect time to show diversity but also be accurate… They\u2019re being out of touch with what\u2019s going on around them.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The film is being shot in London, and let’s be honest, it wouldn’t have been difficult to get skilled people from outside of the city if need be to shoot the scene. <\/p>\n

Understandably, people are upset about the studio’s decision:<\/p>\n\n
