\u00a0We\u2019ve probably all experienced that feeling of discomfort when we hear our voice on a recording for the first time and screeched, \u201cThat\u2019s NOT what I sound like!!!!!??!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Well, we hate to break it to you but the recording isn\u2019t lying – that is<\/em> you. So why does it sound so different to the voice that you\u2019re used to hearing? It\u2019s simple science. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You see, when we speak, we hear our own voice in two different ways: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Sound Waves <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first way we hear our voice is the traditional way: through our ears. The same way we hear other people and other people hear us. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But when we speak, we also hear our voice another way:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Through Our Bones<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Or specifically, through our skull. Our vocal cords<\/a> set off vibrations inside our skull which travel up through our skull and set the ear drum vibrating another way.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thing is, as these vibrations move through our bones, the wavelengths spread out which causes the overall pitch of what we\u2019re hearing to drop. In other words, bone vibrations make our voice sound lower than it actually is.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is why we are so shocked when we hear our own voice on a recording: it\u2019s higher in pitch than what we\u2019re used to. Why? Because when we listen to a recording we\u2019re only hearing our voice through air conduction – i.e. through our ears. To us, this is strange. To others, this is totally normal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
