We\u2019re overworked, underpaid and generally unfulfilled in life and work. The daily grind is bringing us down and our brains and bodies are bearing the brunt of it. Our plates are full, to-do-lists never get done and we\u2019re under constant pressure to bring our best selves to every commitment. In the endless pursuit of financial reward, reputational clout and job security, we\u2019re doing ourselves a lot of damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Introducing: burnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is burnout?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Burnout is defined as a \u2018physical or mental collapse caused by overwork or stress\u2019. In 2019, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.novafm.com.au\/entertainment\/celebrity\/burnout-now-officially-medical-condition\/\">World Health Organisation officially recognised \u2018burnout\u2019 as a medical condition<\/a>. We all know the impact stress can have on our mental health, but it\u2019s easy to forget the physical toll it can take. Symptoms include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Exhaustion<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re tired, fed up and drained. Everything is just a bit too much. Go back to bed, life is easier there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Lack of motivation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Productivity? No ma\u2019am. Remember focusing? Nope, me neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Cynicism<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Why bother. It\u2019s not like it\u2019s actually going to get me anywhere or <em>achieve anything<\/em>. Huh. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Isolation<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re struggling to engage with your work colleagues. You&#8217;re socially and emotionally distanced from your friends and saying no to the work perks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re guilty of any or all of the above,  you may be experiencing burnout. What the can you do about it? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of things actually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" type=\"1\"><li>Get enough sleep. Easier said than done, sure, but sleep health is so damn important. Life is harder when you&#8217;re tired. Rest up and disconnect. You don\u2019t have to be everywhere, all the time.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t overload yourself. That deadline might be important, but so is your health.<\/li><li>Prioritise. Does this really need to be done now?<\/li><li>Ask for help if you need it. Talk to your teachers, bosses, parents, friends, doctor or pharmacist about the best way to manage your stress levels. <\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Your pharmacist can help you figure out a game plan for how to manage the physical symptoms of burnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stress and burnout are linked to high blood pressure, which can be indicative of further health concerns.
