NAIDOC Week is an annual celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people\u2019s culture, history and accomplishments for all Australians, Indigenous and not, to observe and enjoy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Community action committed to fighting for the rights and equal opportunities of Aboriginal people has a long history in Australia and the foundations of NAIDOC Week can be found in the 1920s as Aboriginal rights groups first boycotted Australia Day (26 January) in protest against the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The name NAIDOC originally stood for the \u2018National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee\u2019 which once resided over national action and events dedicated to furthering the hopes and desires of Aboriginal Australia, and subsequently formed the foundations of the modern NAIDOC celebration we see today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Now it exists as an entire week filled with local and national events, awards ceremonies, forums and thought-provoking discussions that hope to bring attention to stories, issues and ideas from the Indigenous community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
