We\u2019re one day away from the annual Good Friday Appeal<\/a> and what better way to shine a light on the incredible work of this charity than by introducing the two little (and mighty) faces of the campaign: Two-year-old Finley and ten-year-old Emily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For those who need a quick recap: The Good Friday Appeal is a charity that raises money to enable The Royal Children\u2019s Hospital in Melbourne to provide world class care for children. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every year, the appeal asks the community to show their support and donate to their annual telethon on Good Friday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that you\u2019re all caught up, let\u2019s meet Finley and Emily!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finley was born with myelomeningocele\u2014a severe type of spina bifida where the membranes and the spinal nerves protrude at birth. At just a tiny one-day old, Finley needed major spinal surgery to fix the opening in his spine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was also born with hydrocephalus (excess cerebrospinal fluid on the brain) and Chiari malformation, two conditions that often go hand in hand with spina bifida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thankfully Finley\u2019s spinal surgery was a success, but the impending challenges he faced did not stop there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOur new home became the Sugar Glider ward,\u201d said Erin, Finley\u2019s mum. \u201cWe transferred all of Finley\u2019s care to the RCH which involved a total of seven different medical teams who nurtured us and treated us like family.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn his short life, he has undergone countless MRIs, X-rays, numerous lines and blood tests, scopes, sleep and swallow studies and lengthy visits to the RCH. Not to mention four major surgeries\u2014his spina bifida repair, two VP shunts for the hydrocephalus and a tracheostomy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finley is currently being fed through a nasogastric tube and is waiting for surgery to insert a feeding tube into his stomach. Although he does not speak yet, he has learnt to communicate with his eyes and through gestures, knowing exactly what he does and does not like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are also so grateful that Finley\u2019s best interests have been put first by his care team\u2019s from the very start. They always make sure we are happy with his care plan\u2014they ask us questions, ensure we understand his diagnosis and allow us to have a say and a sense of control over Finley\u2019s next steps.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emily’s experience with the Royal Children\u2019s Hospital started when she was six years old. She had just been diagnosed with a type of brain tumour and her paediatrician put them in touch with the neurosurgeons at RCH. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The location of Emily\u2019s tumour is in her brain stem, the most difficult part of the brain to operate on, and most dangerous as it controls almost everything that her body does. She has undergone two craniotomies to try to get enough of the tumour to provide more targeted treatment, as chemotherapy was gruelling on her small body.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c<\/strong>Her care team at the RCH have always treated Emily with the greatest care and ensured that Emily has agency and a voice in the process. They are all invested in making sure Emily has the best quality of life while finding a treatment that will give her the best possible outcome,\u201d said Emily\u2019s mum Allison. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Emily is now on her third treatment protocol, a new drug aiming to starve her tumour of the protein it needs to grow, which has so far been much kinder on her body than her two previous therapies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
